Cycling: the very archetype of sport and a means of transport The «green» choice par excellence

For several years now, the Tour de Romandie has been committed to sustainable development.

Cycling already enjoys a «green» image in public opinion and represents the very archetype of sport and the «eco-friendly» means of transport par excellence.

It is not only to follow current trends or to respond to the requests and requirements of sponsors, the cities hosting the stages, the cantons, the UCI or the IOC (which ensures that the principles of sustainability are applied throughout Olympic projects), that the Tour de Romandie is involved in this area, but rather because respect for the principles of sustainability is a universal duty, especially for the most important sporting event in the Swiss Romandy.

As early as 2009, with a study carried out by the AISTS (International Academy of Sport Sciences and Technology), the Tour de Romandie implemented various measures in order to plan and develop its work in the field of sustainable development.

The emphasis was initially placed on waste management and the development of transport.

For waste management, the main objectives were to:

• Reduce waste production; ;

• Recyclable and selectively sort waste; ;

• Strengthen education and awareness-raising on waste management.

• It involves involving the various actors (towns along the route, road services, partners and sponsors), by organizing areas for selective recycling.    waste and by implementing an education campaign, the objectives were able to be achieved.

For the development of transport, the main objectives were to:

• Promote soft mobility, carpooling and public transport; ;

• Minimize traffic and address parking problems; ;

• Reduce the negative impact of transport on the environment (CO2); ;

• Strengthen education and awareness regarding mobility and health.

• It is by encouraging the public to travel by bicycle or public transport, and by giving the opportunity to associations active in the field to do so.
   to make known, by involving local clubs in the implementation of concrete measures (organizing a safe bicycle park), or by insisting
   on the beneficial effects of physical exercise on health and well-being, the objectives having been achieved.

The environmental aspects (reduction of the ecological impact of waste and transport), social (promotion of health, integration of local communities, etc.) and economic (integration of local public transport companies, cost reduction, economic and tourist promotion, etc.) are fully considered through these two initiatives.

The Tour de Romandie constantly works to develop more actions so that the principles of sustainable development are applied and developed within the framework of its event.

The Tour de Romandie Foundation is now part of the UCI’s climate charter.
